History of the temple:

The inaugural meeting of the Hindu Society of Australia was held on 10th, August 1985, with the main objective of establishing a place of worship. The Planner of Adelaide City advised that purchasing an old, unused Church (Adelaide is city of churches, do you know?) would be the best option from the view of getting planning approval for the place of worship. Subsequently, the Chruch at 3A, Dwyer Road, Oaklands Park was purchased for the purpose of building a Hindu temple. Besides, being used as a temple, the premises also to be used for teaching of Hindu Philosophy, Culture, Indian languages and other related subjects not taught in a school curriculum.

The initial decision was to have Shri Ganesha as the only and the principal deity in the interim temple set-up in 1986. The consecration ceremony was held in July 1986.

On the 28th of June, 1998 the foundation for building the new temple (current) was laid. It was decided to rebuild the temple in traditional Hindu style. Plans for these works were drawn by the Chief Architect Shri S Nagarajan from India. Detailed preliminary drawings for all the shrines were done at no cost to the Society by Mr Rajalingam, the engineer who designed the Sydney Murugan Temple. Dr Janan Iswaran and Mrs Pathma graciously financed the building of Shrines. While the whole Hindu community supported the temple building activity, some people deserve a special mention: Mrs Mano & Mr Moti Somers, Mrs Vaiju & Mr Dilip Chirmuley, Mrs Sivanes & Mr Selvakulalingham, Mr Bhagawat Sharma and Dr Jagdish Saraf, the then president of Hindu Society of South Australia. The sculptors who accomplished the beautiful piece of artwork are: Shanmugam Sthapathi, Chidambaranathan, Muthiah Alagappan, Shanmugan Ramanathan and Ramiah Boominathan under the guidance of S Nagarajan – the Chief Sthapathi. Regardless of innumerable problems faced during every stage of the project, the desired outcome was achieved to the joy of the Hindu community. The Consecration ceremony (Maha Kumbhabishekam) for the new temple was held during 6th-9th November, 2000.
